Gorgous, glaring & glamorous !!! Galway City’s groovy g hotel on Ireland’s West coast.
This 103 bedroom hotel, is the flagship property of Monogram Hotels, Ireland’s newest niche brand of luxury hotels. Douglas Wallace collaborated with design director, Philip Treacy, to create a five-star hotel interior unlike anything seen before in Ireland.
Gerry’s Bar is all geometric minimalism in red, white and black – designed for late-night posing, people watching and smooching. Red crystals in the marble floor and mirror-panelled walls contribute a dash of glamour to the mix.
The bar is to the right of an art-deco influenced reception area, dark and intimate with black glass walls and a black Venetian plaster ceiling. The g experience immediately evokes not only the old-fashioned Hollywood glamour but also the hotel’s location near the romantic Galway coast. A tank of Connemara-bred seahorses graces one wall, and the concierge desk is a seashell shaped sculpture created by Philip Treacy and covered in Venetian plaster.
The public rooms leading from reception are independent spaces which flow into each other, linked by a raspberry carpeted catwalk. The double-height Grand Salon, with its dramatic Tom Dixon light installation. The room’s oyster and silver tones make the most of the light that pours in through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lough Atalia.
The Ladies Salon in strong pink is destined to become the g’s signature room. With its Andy Warhol camouflage print fabric-covered chairs and black-and-white vortex hand woven carpet, the room retains a feel of 1940s and 50s glamour but with a distinctly contemporary twist.
Two more masculine rooms – the Gentlemen’s Lounge and Cocktail Bar – follow, featuring deep blue walls framed with golden doorways and with purple and tan velvet furniture from Andrew Martin and Minotti.
The hotel’s 70-seat restaurant continues the seashell theme, with banquettes in purple velvet designed to cocoon and envelop, and jewel coloured Andrew Martin chairs.
The 103 guestrooms are havens of intimacy and sensuality. Entered from darkly seductive corridors with catwalk lighting, the rooms’ clever use of mirrors encourages the play of light on luxurious linen and silks in oyster and gold, with seashell motif upholstery fabric and light-fittings. The bathrooms are in fossiled Jura limestone, with double showers in all suites and bathroom products by Etro – exclusively made in Milan for the g.
A dramatic light installation comprising more than 300 of avant-garde designer Tom Dixon’s famous mirror balls illuminate the double-height central foyer. This complements the hotel’s striking contemporary architecture.
The foyer itself makes the most of the hotel’s waterside location, with extensive use of glass in the design offering panoramic views across Lough Atalia. The glass allows the play of light on the Lough to be reflected in Tom Dixon’s mirror balls, giving observers from outside the hotel a tantalising glimpse of the glamour within.
The g’s 102 deluxe rooms include three individually designed suites. The quality of their design and finishes will secure the g’s reputation for cutting-edge chic. The attention to detail is evident everywhere – from the use of colour and exquisite materials, to the choice of the hotel’s artwork.
Walking into the g is described as a movie star experience – like walking into a film set. Guests experience the hotel in quite individual ways, depending on their own response to it. It is eclectic and seeks to surprise. It is glamorous.
